Hola<\/strong>, and welcome to my faculty homepage. I have been a professor at MTSU since 1998, teaching all levels of Spanish as well as several linguistics classes. I have a Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics<\/a> from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese<\/a> at the Ohio State University<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My current scholarly research<\/a> focuses on patterns of homophony in the inflectional systems of the Western Romance languages, including Spanish, Aragonese, Portuguese, and Galician. I have published a\u00a0textbook on Spanish phonetics called Pronunciaci\u00f3n de la lengua espa\u00f1ola para anglohablantes<\/a><\/em> (Hackett, 2010). On campus, I coordinate the Linguistic Studies minor<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have traveled extensively in Cuba and edited a book on 19th century Cuban social history called\u00a0Social Struggle and Civil Society in Nineteenth Century Cuba<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(Routledge, 2023). In that same vein, In addition to conducting research<\/a> on the history of tourism, I have published a historical novel called A Wintering in Cuba<\/em> (Swan Creek Press, 2026), which you can find out more about here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have been interviewed on southern English and the Nashville accent by The Tennessean<\/a><\/em>, Newschannel5<\/a>, and NPR<\/a>, and have commented on the Cuban sugarcane industry for the BBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
